In social studies, students will begin to study history of Latin America. They will learn how European explorers discovered the lands across the Atlantic. Students will learn about conquistadors and how the people native to the North and South American continents were impacted.
The field trip is Thursday.
In science, students will learn about three types of energy transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. They will complete a digital lesson and view a brain pop.
These BrainPops will help understand energy transfer:

In social studies, we will begin our unit on Latin American history. Students will discuss how explorers from Europe landed in South America and discovered new land and new cultures. Students will learn how Europeans influenced the culture in Latin America. This video provides some background on the conquistadors.
In science, students will begin the unit on the atmosphere and weather. New vocabulary includes: atmosphere, air pressure, ozone, greenhouse gases, troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere. This video helps provide a visual on the layers of the atmosphere.

In social studies, students will be learning and discussing the environmental issues facing Latin America.  They will be able to explain the causes and effect of air pollution in Mexico City, and the causes and effect of deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil.  They will watch videos and read text to be able to complete a graphic organizer and write a paragraph.  Also, students will design a superhero with powers to correct the environmental issue.
In science, students will complete the unit on the Water Cycle.  They will take a summative on Friday.  Tuesday is a 4H day, so that will be a fun lesson.  Look for a study guide to come home on Tuesday, and the test is Friday.

In social studies, students are continuing the unit on Latin America.  This week, students will learn about why people live where they live in Latin America.  Students will analyze maps on population, climate, and natural resources.  Also, students will discuss how natural resources help the country trade with other countries.  Students will have a map quiz later in the week to identify countries and physical features in Latin America:  Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Chile- Physical Features:  Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Amazon River, Amazon Rainforest, Atacama Desert, Andes Mtns, and Sierra Madre Mtns.
In science, students will review the parts of the water cycle.  Also, they will participate in a lab to demonstrate precipitation and run-off.  Students will discuss sources of water on Earth and how to conserve water.  They will identify reservoirs of freshwater on Earth.  Also, they will complete a digital lesson and lab from the HMHed text.

Happy 2020!

January 6- 10
In social studies, students will begin the unit on Latin America. They will first learn the geography of Latin America. They will locate the following political and physical features: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, Amazon River, Amazon Rainforest, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Panama Canal, Andes Mountains, Sierra Madre Mountains, and Atacama Desert. Students will label a map with all of the features. Also, they will learn about why people live where they live in Latin America.
In science, students will begin the unit on hydrology, beginning with the water cycle.
Students will read along with the textbook in class and complete on-line digital learning labs. Students will discuss the importance of water and how to protect our water sources. Resource: HMHed Online Textbook- Unit 3 Lesson 1

In social studies, we will begin our unit on Canada.  Students will learn the geography of Canada including:  Rocky Mountains, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Hudson Bay, the St. Lawrence River, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Shield, and the province of Quebec. We will look at Canada's climate and natural resources and use that information to discuss where (and why) most people live in Canada. (hint:  they mostly live along the Canada-US border!).  Also, students will continue to work on the Entrepreneur Project.  They have great imaginations and excellent ideas for products!  We are still learning about trade barriers. I have attached the planning guide under Resources for the project. Each step should become a slide in the power point.
In science, we are reviewing the standards we have learned over the semester, starting with the layers of the Earth, to erosion/weathering, and to types of rocks and minerals.  Students will complete flashcards to review the vocabulary and concepts.  All work is completed in class.

In social studies, we will continue to talk about economy.  Vocabulary to know:
traditional, command, market, mixed, trade barriers, entrepreneur, natural resources, capital good, and human capital.  Students will read about the types of economies and learn the 3 basic economic questions.  To demonstrate knowledge, students will become ENTREPRENEURS!  They will choose a country (UK, Germany, Russia, or Canada), and use an atlas to identify natural resources of that country.  They will choose a natural resource and create a product to sell.  Each student will create a power point to show the name of the business, the product (what to make), the natural resource, the capital goods (how to make it), the customer type (who to make it for), the currency, and the trade barriers.   All work is completed in class, but feel free to have your student show the power point at home (it is saved in Office 365).
In science, students will learn about the 3 classes of rocks:  sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic.  Students will read, watch videos, and examine real rocks to learn how to classify them based on properties such as texture, composition, and formation.  Students will annotate (take notes) on the textbook pages using Snap and Read (a digital tool).  Lastly, students will complete an on-line virtual lab with GIZMOS to classify the 3 types of rocks.

In social studies, we will continue to look at government and economy in Europe with a concentration on the UK, Russia, and Germany. Students will learn vocabulary related to economy including: traditional, market, mixed, and command. They will also learn about trade barriers such as quota, tariff, and embargo.

In science, students will learn the properties/characteristics of minerals. They did an excellent job with the virtual lab on Gizmos last week. They will also have a 4H day on Tuesday. Students will learn about color, shape, luster, hardness, fracture, cleavage, and density of minerals.

In social studies, students are learning about terms related to government and economy. We will apply these terms to the countries of UK, Germany, and Russia. Students will use definitions and images to learn the similarities and differences between a presidential and parliamentary democracy. They will look at citizen participation in these government systems.

In science, students will start the unit on Rocks and Minerals. They will discover how minerals are identified and classified based on properties. Students will complete a virtual lab where they will test minerals for hardness, density, shape, luster, and streak. They will investigate rocks and minerals in an in-class lab to sort samples into categories.
