Assessments

Assessments include all tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, homework, labs carried out during the whole school year. Formative assessment does not count towards the final mark.

Every Thursday come prepared for a quiz or test, unless announced otherwise.

Students are asked to keep all assessments in one place, so as to help them study for future tests and quizzes. To help you stay organized I will periodically update the expected contents of your assessment folder (link provided under resources), however it is not a substitute for your paying attention in class, and being proactive.

Zeros

Why did I get a zero on my report?
If you have received a zero mark it means you did not submit an assignment, homework, or project on its due date or on any subsequent day before it was marked and handed back to the rest of the class.

The same goes for Tests and quizzes, you would get a zero if you have not made arrangements to rewrite a missed test or quiz per department policy.

How does the zero affect my final mark?
Zeros are place holders for missed assessments. By the end of the year all students will be given some kind of makeup assessment to substitute for one or two zeros, or given the option to drop a couple of their lowest marks.

So if you have one or two zeros you should take heed and be careful about being on time hence forth, but not worry about it too much.

However if you have collected 5 or more zeros - you have a lot to think about. These zeros reflect a trend of repeatedly missing assessments. So much missed work makes it hard for a teacher to fairly assess you, or give you a meaningful final percentage mark.

I am still worried about the zero mark what do I do?
Please come and speak to me politely, outside of class time. Please remember that I do not benefit in any way by assigning you a zero. I am here to help you - within reason - however you must take responsibility for your own work, and not get in the habit of always making excuses or blaming others.

Homework and other Assignments

Homework is assigned everyday with few exceptions. On days no homework is assigned students are encouraged to review material covered so far. Parents can find the homework assigned under resources, please note that even though I plan on updating this link periodically, it is not a substitute for the student paying attention in class and noting down the homework assigned.

Students are expected to always finish the assigned homework and be prepared to hand it in at the start of class. Homework can be checked for completion, collected to be marked for accuracy, or taken up in class for self-evaluation.

Please note that all homework and other assignments must be submitted in hard copy, at this time I am not accepting emailed assignments.

Marks

The final mark should not be a surprise to any body.

I regularly post marks in the class. In addition to that, marks will either be sent home at the end of the each month (except December) for parents to review, sign, and send back, OR be updated on this site if the system so allows.

Please bear in mind that the final mark is generated based on the student's performance throughout the academic year, the first few report cards though indicative of a trend, can differ from the student's final mark based on future performance.
