Steve Cooper's Forest Secure Premier League Safety With Victory Over Arsenal

Published May 20, 2023, 4:18 p.m.

Forest secured Premier League safety thanks to an early goal from Taiwo Awoniyi that set off wild scenes of celebration at City Ground.

Manchester City were confirmed as champions and Arsenal relegated back into the Championship with this result, ending any slim pre-match hopes of Arsenal winning outright.

Taiwo Awoniyiês first-half opener

Forest were never out of the game after Awoniyi scored Forest's opening goal of the match with his first-half effort ensuring Awoniyi made no mistake when his clearance hit Ben Johnson and hit his knee before rolling past goalkeeper Dean Henderson for an excellent strike that kept them competitive throughout.

Mikel Arteta's side began their campaign strongly and Said Benrahma had an effort ruled out for offside. Said eventually scored with another powerful shot deemed offside - sending City Ground faithful into an uproar of cheering.

As early as the 25th minute, it appeared as if they would suffer their second consecutive away defeat when Danilo played Morgan Gibbs-White a pass and her instinctive volley gave the home side an early advantage. Although their late rally provided them with renewed hope, they could not find an equaliser.

Renan Lodiês second-half goal

Lodi, on loan from Atletico Madrid of La Liga, proved an asset in Forest's left channel. His first cross was well blocked by Hennessey before his follow-up delivery somehow missed its target, Bukayo Saka.

As the game entered its final 20 minutes, Hennessey made another quick reaction save to block Martin Odegaard's shot from just inside the area and Ramsdale made another smart stop to deny Gabriel Martinelli his deflected attempt.

Hennessey is expected to pass his fitness test ahead of Sunday's trip to Everton, while full-back Neco Williams and defender Harry Toffolo remain questionable for this match-up.

Aaron Ramsdaleês injury-time penalty

Aaron Ramsdale may find himself featured prominently when season-crowning montages are assembled later. As goalkeeper he saved most of what went amiss on an action-packed and thrilling afternoon.

After Bruno Fernandes' hesitant run up was adjudicated worthy of a penalty kick, Ramsdale came out swinging. His flailing arm stopped the ball inside the box evoking memories of Martin Keown's celebration after Ruud Van Nistelrooy missed his penalty against Manchester City back in 2003.

As reported on BT Sport commentary, Ramsdale's response - as witnessed by Chelsea supporters who had given him grief throughout the match - included an interesting twist. As Bukayo Saka wheeled away in celebration on one side of the pitch, he waved towards Ramsdale who was waving back.

Leandro Trossardês first-half effort

Arsenal were eager to rebound after suffering a humiliating collapse that threatened their top flight status, yet Steve Cooper's side could never gain control against Forest despite having their home support behind them.

Trossard displayed his ability to find space with an impressive bending effort that was ultimately disallowed due to being offside, then quickly made amends with an assist for Gabriel Martinelli who scored the opening goal of the match.

Forest fans begin the second half with an angry tirade directed at Arsenal for failing to protect their lead, particularly Jakub Kiwior and Granit Xhaka who appear unimpressive under pressure from Forest fans. Morgan Gibbs-White attempts to add energy, but his low cross is cleared away for a corner kick.

Morgan Gibbs-Whiteês second-half effort

Gibbs-White was once touted as one of Britain's brightest prospects and Gary Lineker encouraged viewers to "remember his name". On Saturday at City Ground he became one of Forest's heroes by scoring the opening goal en route to regaining top flight status for another season - leaving visitors Leicester chasing them hard in pursuit.

Martin Odegaard's loose pass sent Martin Odegaard racing forward and he capitalised on Gabriel Magalhaes' challenge to slip past Aaron Ramsdale for an early lead. Gibbs-White tried his luck after halftime by recycling a free kick but his effort hit the side netting after taking aim from inside his own penalty area; Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus each missed targets with efforts of their own as Forest held firm against attacks from beyond its deep defence.
