Two and a half decades after James Cameron's Avatar became the highest-grosing film of all time, Pandora is back! Avatar 2: The Way of Water will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.

The movie introduces the Metkayina tribe of Na'vi who live on Pandora's underwater reefs. Titanic cast member Kate Winslet stars as Ronal, a free-diving member of this new tribe and Cliff Curtis portrays their chief, Tonowari.

Second Unit Director Garrett Warren Releases New BTS Video

One of the more breathtaking scenes in Avatar 2 is an underwater sequence where a mako submersible is smashing into rocks that fill it with water. Warren's new Behind-the-Scenes video (which you can watch below) details how they pulled off this remarkable feat of cinematic scale.

Garrett Warren is a veteran stunt performer, stunt double, fight coordinator and unit director who has had his fair share of troubles. He's had sixty-six surgeries, had his face blown off by a car and performed for major movies like Mission Impossible 3 and X-Men: First Class while sharing stories about his near death experiences with cameras. But it is his relentless dedication to his craft that has earned him his place among the greats; even now at twenty nineteen his life still holds plenty of intriguing surprises for him to explore.

Filming the Submarine Scene

Cameron's passion for the ocean is evident throughout all of his films. It's no surprise that he pioneered film technology to create stunning visual effects in Avatar, and this time around he's taking underwater scenes to new heights.

One of the most challenging sequences in Avatar 2 was shot on a real flooding submarine rig. A new Behind-the-Scenes video from Second Unit Director Garrett Warren shows how it was brought to life, confirming that numerous safety protocols had been put in place for stunt performers inside.

This intense underwater scene shows a sub called Mako plowing into some rocks, rapidly filling with water. To film it, the crew used an elaborate tank designed to hold over 250,000 gallons of water.

The tank was also utilized for filming the actors wearing performance-capture suits, giving them complete control over their environment. Kate Winslet reportedly held her breath underwater for seven minutes!

Safety Measures in Place

Avatar 2, the sequel to James Cameron's original hit, is currently in production and it looks like it might be one of the most technologically advanced movies ever. Now, a new behind-the-scenes video has revealed that an intensely claustrophobic flood submarine was utilized for some underwater scenes in the movie.

Second Unit Director Garrett Warren recently released a Behind the Scenes (BTS) video, which showcases how the film's intense submarine scene was brought to life. This sequence depicts Mako submersible being smashed into some rocks and quickly filling up with water as its pilots attempt to escape.

Thankfully, this latest video and its captions provide assurance that safety protocols were followed for the stunt performers inside the rig. This is great news for fans eager to see what this sequel will bring!

The Final Scene

In Avatar 2, Jake Sully and his family seek refuge in a new Na'vi clan at sea. Unfortunately, Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and his RDA quickly discover them and use an advanced arsenal to wipe them out.

Therefore, the Sullys must flee and fight their way to safety. This leads to an intense underwater battle where Jake and Quaritch square off against one another.

Thankfully, Jake is able to defeat Quaritch and save his son Spider from drowning. But before that happens, Tuk - the youngest Sully child - is taken away by floodwaters on board the sinking vessel, so Neytiri and Kiri must fight in order to rescue her.

The final scene in Avatar 2's submersible rig is especially terrifying. It depicts a submarine called Mako being smashed into some rocks and filling with water - an intensely claustrophobic scene, but Second Unit Director Garrett Warren's latest BTS video and captions confirm that many safety measures had been put in place for the stunt performers inside.
