In your answer you must discuss any relevant core political ideas. (12 marks)

1. Explain the realist concept of the security dilemma, referring to the thinkers that propose its existence e.g. Morgenthau and Mersheimer. You also need to bring in relevant thinkers from the core political ideas section of the course e.g. Conservatives who have a negative view of human nature. Use them to explain why realists believe states will behave the way they do. You also need to briefly look at relevant examples from around the world to back up your argument.
2. Explain the liberal concept of complex interdependence, referring to the thinkers that propose its existence e.g. Keohane and Nye. You also need to bring in relevant thinkers from the core political ideas section of the course e.g. Socialists who have an optimistic view of human nature. Use them to explain why liberals believe states will behave the way they do. Liberals (Locke?) also believe in the benefits of mutual co-operation through trade. You also need to briefly look at relevant examples from around the world to back up your argument.

You need to make sure (especially in the second paragraph) that there is a sense of comparison in your answer.

This is a 12-mark question. About 15 minutes in the examination.
