Homework--to read a piece from "Nearly 100 Fantastic Pieces of Journalism."

1) Make a list of your twenty favorite sentences. Pick five and write a paragraph each on why you like it. Focus on how the sentence is written. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/05/nearly-100-fantastic-pieces-of-journalism/238230/

2) Look at the first and last sentences--write a paragraph each about how they are effective in opening and closing the piece. Think about "why." Why would the author begin with this sentence? Why would the author end with this sentence?

3) Pick a sentence you think is representative of the whole piece...a sentence that you think kind of summarizes the essay as a whole. Make an argument for why this sentence is most representative of the piece.

4) Keep a two-column list of words--one for words you don't know and one for words you think have been used in an interesting way.
