Homework--to choose read a piece from "Nearly 100 Fantastic Pieces of Journalism." 

1) Make a list of your twenty favorite sentences. Pick five and write a paragraph each on why you like it. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/05/nearly-100-fantastic-pieces-of-journalism/238230/

2) Look at the first and last sentences--write a paragraph each about how they are effective in opening and closing the piece.

3) Pick a sentence you think is representative of the whole piece...a sentence that you think kind of summarizes the essay as a whole.

4) Keep a two-column list of words--one for words you don't know and one for words you think have been used in an interesting way.
