Additional Info
You and two or three others will decide on an article that you will read. You will each do 1-4 separately. You will do 5 as a group. Articles are distributed on a first come/first served basis.
1)--20 points Make a list of your 10 favorite sentences (do not duplicate--your 10 sentences here should not include any sentences from #2 and #3). Pick three and write a paragraph each on why you like it. Focus on how the sentence is written. Pick sentences that give you something to say. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/05/nearly-100-fantastic-pieces-of-journalism/238230/
2)--30 points Look at the first and last sentences--write a paragraph each about how they are effective in opening and closing the piece. Think about "why." Why would the author begin with this sentence? Why would the author end with this sentence?
3)--30 points Pick a sentence you think is representative of the whole piece...a sentence that you think kind of summarizes the essay as a whole. Make an argument for why this sentence is most representative of the piece.
4)--10 points Keep a two-column list of words--one for words you don't know and one for words you think have been used in an interesting way. You should have at least seven words in each column. You should write definitions for each of the words you don't know.
5) Group portion--10 points
Your group will make a presentation to the class on your article. In your presentation, you will talk about the content of your article. One group grade worth 10% of your grade will be given--all group members will receive the same grade. Assuming there are four people in your group, duties should be distributed this way( if there are fewer than four, distribute the roles evenly):
1--Summarize the piece...give the class the nuts and bolts of your article, including the detail you found most interesting
2--Address themes of the piece...lessons that can be learned
3--Five things that you learned about the article's subject...not lessons but facts
4--A specific way in which the article changed your perspective and made you think about something in a different way.
