Birmingham Jail assignment:

Use the documents below to complete the assignment.

1. Read the document entitled "Birmingham Jail original, questions" first. Read the public statement from the Birmingham clergy explaining why they want Dr. King to leave--it's what motivated him to write his letter in the first place. Then read the questions you'll have to answer after you read King's letter--questions 1 and 3 from Questions for Discussion and questions 1 and 3 from Questions on Rhetoric and Style...you'll answer these on your own. And in groups, you'll answer 4, 6, 7, 10, and 11. Make you sure you know what you're being asked before you start reading King's letter.

2. The other document is the letter itself. Read it closely, and look for the things that the questions are asking you to find. It's easier to do it as you read rather than after you read. If you finish reading and the four questions you're to do on your own, go ahead and start working on the homework ("Higher Education"). The sub may let you work in groups, but she may not. If she doesn't, continue to work ahead on the homework, and we'll do the group work next week.
