Locavore synthesis essay

English Classes

5A Advanced Composition

Date Due

Jan. 29, 2016

Additional Info

1) Read the first page--the prompt.

2) Write possible considerations for the locavore movement without looking through the sources. Write as many as you can come up with--three at minimum.

3) Decide whether you generally think the locavore movement is an overall good idea that can work or a bad idea that can't--write a sentence expressing this. This is to help you approach the paper with a point of view.

4) Keep in mind that the prompt does not ask how you feel about the locavore movement--you are being asked what communities should consider before beginning a locavore movement.

5) Work and read through the sources, jotting down quotes/statistics/info that can help you write your paper. Have at least three sources in support of your argument and one source you can argue against (address a counter-argument).

6) Write your main argument, and it should address what communities should consider--not whether or not you think the locavore movement is a good idea or not.

7) Write the first sentences of your primary body paragraphs--these would be topic statements about the things that should be considered. For ex: "The first thing a community should consider is _______."

8) Figure out which pieces of info from your sources work best to support each argument and include that info underneath the topic statement.

If these steps for some reason don't make sense or aren't clear, maybe this will help: Basically, you are writing what I call a "skeleton essay"--your job is to clearly state their main point, examine the sources and include effective supporting evidence, and to do that for your MAIN point and for all of your SUPPORTING points.  It's like writing the essay without writing the essay.
