Read the Raymond Carver short story, "Cathedral." What is Carver trying to say? Pay close attention to dialogue, details, and the ending. Write down your answer.

Share your responses with a few classmates. Then work with a few classmates to develop a mini-lesson you would teach to your own class of students. How would you get them to see what you see so they can understand in the same way you do? You will present this to the class. Make sure each person has a speaking role. You can divide up parts--maybe someone can take dialogue, someone can take details, another can take figurative language, etc.

Make sure you working to show how the various elements of the story all add up to a single argument.
