Additional Info
The links below will take you to four different poems. Read each poem.

1) Identify both a "local" and a "global" main idea. What is the poem about? What might the poem REALLY be about?

2) Identify any central strategies you see the author using to help develop these main ideas/themes. Start by looking at any poetic devices you see...and then see what they add up to.

3) Compare notes in your groups. Everyone should have a chance to talk. Discuss all four poems. About 15-20 minutes into the group activity I'll assign each group a poem to teach to the class.

4) When you teach your poem to the class, you should direct them to things your group saw. What are the important elements (language, devices, strategy) you feel everyone should see in the poem? How do these elements help the author develop his main idea (be sure to say what you believe the main idea is). The class should take notes as each group presents.
