"The Chrysanthemums"
Date
Feb. 11, 2016
Additional Info
Read John Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums."
You are going to write a character portrait of Elisa Allen. This portrait will include your impressions of her, her relationship to the two men in the story, and how you think Steinbeck ultimately wants us to view her and her place in the world.
Pay close attention to the specific details we are told about Elisa (and other characters, too) and where she lives. Focus on things like setting, physical descriptions (of characters and things), the characters' actions, and the characters' dialogue. If you see Steinbeck using specific literary devices (metaphor, personification, heavy imagery, etc.) and you can make these devices a part of your argument, then please do.
Pay extra special attention to the chrysanthemums. What symbolic value (if any) do they add to the story?
Use as much support as you can in your portrait of Elisa; portraits should be a page or a little longer.
