The Water is Wide, chapters 4-6
Date Due
Jan. 18, 2018
Additional Info
Read chapters 4, 5, and 6 of The Water is Wide.
For chapters 4 and 5, follow the S.O.L.L.I.D.D.D acronym on the "annotation acronyms" sheet attached here--complete one per chapter.
For chapter 4, all of your acronym examples should support a single overall argument you've established for the chapter. Write down the argument, then support it with S.O.L.L.I.D.D.D.
For chapter 5, all of your S.O.L.L.I.D.D. examples should support any larger argument you see Conroy developing throughout the book. Make sure to write your argument down. This means that you choose an example of text that fits the acronym, you write about its immediate context and importance, then its larger context and importance within the book as a whole, then its possible implications to life outside the novel--look for ways Conroy is commenting on his personal experience AND the world in general.
For chapter 6, write one page about the organization of the chapter. Think about how the organization differs from other chapters and the reasons for that. Think about the effect on the reader; think about it from a strategical point of view; think about why Conroy might have felt it necessary to organize THIS particular chapter in THIS particular manner. Use text, use details, and make a fully-developed and specific argument.
