Buy some Kleenex, then read Gary Smith's "Higher Education."  Just read it. Then think about it for a while...take as long as you need.  THEN identify strategies you see Smith using to tell this story--think about how he introduces people, the dialogue and detail he includes, his style of writing, the way he begins, the way he ends, and on and on and on.  Write about those strategies (and how they affect the reader), and use at least 10 specific examples of text to support your analysis.  For at least five of those examples you should dig deep into the specific language and structure of the sentence--address things like repetition, parallelism, specific and meaningful word choice, etc.  My suggestion would be to identify three or four strategies you feel comfortable writing about, and use maybe three pieces of text for each.  It's difficult to support an overall strategy by using just one example...not that you can't try...but it's a tough trick to pull off.
