2014-2015

Principles of English 1, fall 2014

Date

Oct. 21, 2014

Additional Info
1. Monday AND Tuesday Grammar: parts of speech & identify sentence parts

yes wally was eager to prove that his dog blue was different from the other hunting dogs

2. Symbolism: the essay you will be writing for this novel will ask you to analyze Golding's use of symbols and characters (as symbols) to communicate meaning. It is important that you realize that, as humans, we are seekers of meaning; as writers, we are creators of meaning. It is your job, as a seeker, to figure out what Golding, as a creator, is trying to tell you. Think of a novel (or any piece of writing) as the liaison for a conversation between you and the author. What is he trying to tell you? Ask questions. Make observations. Give your opinion. TALK BACK to him.

3. Note-taking: The way to be successful in reading and writing about what you've read is to take good, consistent notes.

  • post-it notes (available on the corner of my desk) best for quick observations and/or questions
  • paper strips: Good for lengthier observations and/or analysis
  • graphic organizer (will be handed out to you): great for seeing textual connections at a glance

4. On the graphic organizer, please choose ONE character out of the following to track throughout the novel: Ralph, Piggy, Jack, or Simon. Please choose TWO of the following items/places to track throughout the story: the conch, Piggy's glasses, Jack's knife, the fire, the Beast, the island, or war paint.

5. Homework for Monday's class: write down THREE thoughtful, intelligent questions for chapters 3 and 4. We will be having a Socratic Seminar on Monday about chapters 3 and 4. You will be graded not only on the questions you develop, but also on your ability to talk with authority about what you've read so far. The Socratic seminar will be considered your quiz for Chapter 3. Questions should NOT be surface-level comprehension questions.

6. If time allows, you will read silently.

*Don't forget to stay on top of your vocabulary exercises. We will be grading the first three in class on Thursday. This week's list is #8, which starts on page 91. For these exercises, ALL words must be written out.
