Peer Revision on Rough Drafts

2014-2015

Principles of English 1, fall 2014

Date

Aug. 28, 2014

Additional Info
Thursday grammar: Punctuation
After we go over the grammar, you can put your sheet that contains two weeks of grammar into the basket for grading.

A couple notes for the vocab quiz tomorrow:
  • holocaust is NOT capitalized. The Holocaust (with a capital H) refers to a specific holocaust, the one that occurred in Germany. This will be marked wrong tomorrow.
  • confusion between benevolent and amicable
  • Since spelling counts, handwriting counts. If I can't decipher it, it's wrong.
  • Again, verb forms count, even in the synonym and antonym sections.
  • Many people get perfect scores on the synonym/antonyms, but do poorly on completing the sentence. Why is this?

I will begin the lesson by going through a peer review guide so you know what I will be expecting to happen in your groups.

You should be prepared today with a completed first draft. You will be placed into a group of approximately four people.

Directions for peer review sessions:
  1. Each group member should have a writing utensil!
  2. Person with nearest birthday will read first. Readers will proceed chronologically.
  3. Reader #1 will read his or her essay out loud.
  4. Reader will stop after each paragraph to get feedback from group members.
  5. Group members should use the system from the presentation and should also ask clarifying questions. (Readers should make note of what others are asking or pointing out, as this is a good indicator of what your audience wants to know.)
  6. After subsequent paragraphs, consider each of the previous paragraphs, as you will have a clearer picture of where the author is going in the essay.
  7. Author should write down all feedback on his or her paper.
  8. After one reader has finished and there are no more comments, questions, or suggestions, the next reader may begin.

Try not to spend any more than about ten minutes on each essay.

Your rough draft, with all your group's comments, will be turned on for a grade. (Part of your grade will be based on your ability to utilize feedback, so make sure that your draft is full of marks and comments.)
