Additional Info
1. Tuesday AND Wednesday grammar

I like the fact that Anne Sexton uses descriptive and shocking language in her poem "Courage."

REMINDER: Vocab books must be returned! Please check with me so that I can check you off the list and make sure you're returning the same book you took.

2. Notes sheets
You will need three of these, to be completed before any writing can be done. Please show them to me to get my okay.

3. Practice Notes sheet assignment
The goal of any notes you take is that you can use the notes for writing your essay/speech without having to go back to the original source. You should be quoting anything that you think you might conceivably use in your final essay, always erring on the side of having too much information. (It's better to have too much than not enough.)

For practice, please turn to page A37 of the literature book under your chair. On this page choose ONE of the magazine articles to read. There are five choices. Use this article to complete the following exercise. (You may want to take out your notes on quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing that we did earlier in the year. For review, please see the slide show used in class.)

  1. Summarize the introduction with lead-in phrase (w/ citation)
  2. Summarize the conclusion without lead-in phrase (w/ citation)
  3. Paraphrase one paragraph’s topic sentence without introducing the author (w/ citation)
  4. Paraphrase a supporting idea with a lead-in phrase (w/ citation)
  5. Quote the article with a lead-in phrase (w/ citation)
  6. Quote the article without introducing the author (w/ citation)
  7. At least one example must include use of ellipses
  8. At least one example must include use of brackets
  9. Write an annotation of the article that contains all three required parts (author and credentials, summary, how you might use this information in an essay).
