Library Day #1

2014-2015

Principles of English 1, fall 2014

Date

Sept. 15, 2014

Additional Info
Good news! Because we are going to be in the library for two days this week, we are not going to do a grammar sentence this week. Remember, however, that we have a quiz on LAST WEEK's vocabulary list this Friday. In addition to those words, there will be review words from the previous three lists AND a short grammar section.

When you get to the library, you need to log in to your Google account (student email) and then go to my website to access the following directions and activity document.

Please follow ALL directions for completing today's activity.

  1. If you did not do it on Friday, please write down the four words and definitions you need to know in the notes you started.

Claim: This is equivalent to your thesis statement, what you are arguing. This must be a debatable statement. The claim is not a question.

Evidence: These are all the reasons FOR your argument, the “pros.”

Concession: Concessions are where you acknowledge the views or opinions of the other side. (aka counterclaim)

Refutation: After you acknowledge the other side’s viewpoint, you need to refute that viewpoint or show why your evidence is still stronger. (aka rebuttal)

  2. Please open this document and follow ALL directions.

  3. If you finish your draft before the end of the hour, you can start choosing your topic. Use the template provided in the shared document. Use the links in tomorrow's lesson to help you generate some ideas.
