Additional Info
1. Literary term #37: Act
A major division in a play, often further divided into scenes. The five-act model is popular, especially for tragic plays.
Act One: Exposition
Act Two: Complications
Act Three: Climax of Action
Act Four: Falling Action
Act Five: Catastrophe or Resolution

2. Allusion #37: Styx
The river in Hades that marks the dividing line between the land of the living and the land of the dead. Charon ferries the dead across. Modern-day allusions include the rock band Styx and an episode of The Simpsons in which Homer fights in the Trojan War and then crosses the River Styx while music from the band Styx plays in the background.

3. Reading of Act III, scenes iii through v.

4. Double meanings worksheet for end of Act III.

5. Essay response (on back of worksheet): How does Shakespeare use double meanings in order to create an emotional distance between Juliet and her mother? Remember, as with the essay we wrote as a class, talk about Shakespeare's language choices and how those choices create tension and characterization; do not talk about the characters as if they exist and are making their own choices.
