Allusion #6: Koran (also Quran or Qu'ran)

The Koran is considered by Muslims to be the word of God (Allah in Arabic), revealed to the prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. The revelations began when Muhammad was 40, in the 609 CE and continued until 632 CE, the year of his death. It has its basis in the Judeo-Christian tradition and was transmitted orally for hundreds of years before it was written down.

Vocabulary list: You will be responsible for knowing the list of vocabulary words on page 649. They will appear within the text, but you will also be quizzed on these words.

Before we begin reading, you will receive a chart that will fill out as we read. You will be watching for things that Odysseus says and does that you think fits into one of the four hero categories we have learned (Classical, Medieval, Romantic, or Modern). You should have this sheet with you each day, along with your study guide packet.

In the first column, write down the attribute that belongs to that category of hero (ex: "moody" for Romantic hero). Next to that attribute, in the next column, write down the direct quotation from the book that illustrates that attribute. In the third column, paraphrase the quotation, putting it into your own words so it is easier to understand. Finally, list the citation, the line number and page number, for easy reference.
