Additional Info
Learning Target: Students will recall the stages of the hero's journey and apply them to a familiar film or book.

First we will watch a short video that shows more examples of the Hero's Journey.

After the video, I will go through a popular film, as a case study, to show how the stages can be varied.

Finally, you will be put into a small group in order to name the various stages in a film or story. I will assign a film or book, but if your group has something else in mind, just let me know what it is before you begin. ALL members of your group must be familiar with your choice. This is important so that everyone can contribute and debate.

Group 1: Frozen
Group 2: The Little Mermaid
Group 3: Toy Story
Group 4: Up
Group 5: Wall-E
Group 6: The Hunger Games

Rules:
  1. Choose a scribe (someone to take notes for your group)
  2. Send ONE person to get two pieces of newsprint paper and a couple markers.
  3. As a group, discuss your film or book. Make sure everyone remembers the details.
  4. Open your notebooks to your notes and start to go through the stages of the Hero's Journey.
  5. The scribe should keep a list of which parts of the film correspond to the stages in your notes. (remember that they may not be in the exact same order)
  6. On your pieces of newsprint, draw out representations of each of the 12 stages. You must do this non-linguistically (no words allowed).
  7. Next to each picture, write the number of the stage that matches the scene being depicted. Use arrows to show "movement" from scene to scene.
  8. Groups will present their findings to the class. Divide the stages among the entire group so that everyone in the group speaks when you present.
