Additional Info
Learning Target: Students will compare two different interpretations of the same character.

Hours one, four, and five, we will head to the auditorium at the beginning of class for pictures. Please make sure you take your student ID with you.

When we return, we will talk about Calypso. First, as a class, let's write down everything we know about Calypso on the board. After we have discussed her, turn to the page in your book that has the song lyrics on it (655). Follow along as we listen to the song

After the song, read through the lyrics one more time on your own. With a partner, discuss what you now know about Calypso that you didn't know before. Then, as a class, we will discuss the following:
  • What new information does Suzanne Vega provide for us about Calypso?
  • Does Vega portray a different Calypso than we thought about her when we read the text initially?
  • What aspects of Calypso does Vega want to highlight? Which aspects does she try to downplay?
After our discussion, you will get into groups seven groups of four. (We will do a count off.) Within your groups, you will read the next section of the text out loud, taking turns every twenty-five-or-so lines. As you read, pause often to make sure you know what is going on. As a group, you will also discuss the questions on the margin on pages 657 and 658. Be prepared to share your answers with the class.
