Literary Term #18: Verbal Irony
Verbal irony is when the intended meaning of something someone says is different than the literal meaning of the words; saying one thing and meaning another.
Ex: "If you don't be quiet, I am going to rip your tongue out of your mouth." Meaning: I really want you to be quiet.
Ex: "I see you've left the door open again. I just love letting all the warm air out so that I can freeze." Meaning: Please close the door because I am cold.

Allusion #18: Pandora's Box

Something that "opens the door" for bad occurrences, opened innocently by someone possibly out of curiosity; named for Pandora who was the first mortal woman on earth; she was sent by Zeus, to marry Prometheus' brother to punish man for Prometheus’ theft of  Zeus' fire. At the wedding, Pandora was given a beautiful box with strict instructions to never open it. When her curiosity got the best of her, she opened it and out flew all the evils of the world. Only hope was left in the bottom.
