1. With someone adjacent to you, please quiz each other on terms and allusions 6-10.


2. We will finish annotating the poem we started yesterday, "Ah Are You Digging On My Grave?"


3. On the back of the poem, there are several questions. On your own, take a few minutes to respond to the questions. Then, we will discuss them as a class.


4. You will receive another poem, "Child Development" by Billy Collins. In a small group, please annotate the poem. Among your many annotations, please do the following:

  • number every five lines
  • identify the visual imagery in the first stanza; discuss its possible meaning
  • identify the auditory imagery in the second stanza; discuss its possible meaning
  • discuss the connotation of the word "mugs" in the second stanza
  • identify the allusion in the second stanza; discuss its importance & possible meaning
  • discuss the connotations of the words "squirts" and "giants" in the third stanza
  • discuss the situational irony present in the final stanza


Please keep this poem with the Thomas Hardy poem. You will need it when you write your comparison essay.
