Freshman Literature, Fall 2014

Date

Sept. 18, 2014

Additional Info
Learning Target: Students will locate and interpret symbols in visual art and in poetry and prose.

Today, we are going to start looking at symbolism as one way to analyze a text. To start us out, think back to the poem we read, "She Walks in Beauty." Try to complete the following sentence:

In this poem, the woman's ______________ is a symbol for her ______________.

What had a larger meaning than what was on the surface?
What does Lord Byron try to draw our attention to?
Do you think this deliberate drawing of attention tells the reader something?

Please take out a sheet of paper for Cornell Notes. Our subject is Symbolism. Please put today's date on the top. Our essential question is:
How do artists and writers use symbols to create and communicate deeper meaning?

Follow along with this presentation and ask any questions you have along the way!
