"2 - Fusion ExamPro check"
If you weren't in, I saved my annontated slides as an attachment to the same lesson folder in the Content Library so you can complete your handouts
The "1 - Lifecycle of stars explained" sheet will help you with the homework (Solutions on the saved annotated slides in content library)
SOME POINTS TO READ BEFORE STARTING;
THE KEY IS NOT TO OVERTHINK THE ANSWERS......
- Q1.... the first thing to say is that someone will try and fill in the 'stage 4' box - IT DOES NOT ASK YOU TO, so please don't try to..... Here are the hints to help you keep your answers on point and concise to get the marks.... Like I say, try to just address these points, without writing more than you need to....
- a) i) and ii) Use the wording in the question, and the sentence scaffold - it's 1 mark! Keep it simple; e.g. "The larger the 'mass of dust and gas in the cloud', the ................ the 'force of gravity' between then"
- b) it's two marks, keep it simple!...
- State what the two forces are
- State whether they are a force inwards or outwards on the star
- Compare their relative sizes if its stable
- If you really want to impress me, get all the detail in with less words, and use bullet points
- c) Stage 4 is asking about the Red SuperGiant phase where "helium starts to fuse to form heavier elements (up to iron) and swells". Again, keep it simple - it is only 2 marks! Cover the key parts and stop!
- Q2)
- a) Keep it simple - 2 points!!
- What element fuses together to make Helium?
- What two conditions does it need?
- b) Keep it simple - 2 points!!
- Use your notes on the "1 - Lifecycle of stars explained" to help - again - 2 bullet point!!...
- In which stage of the lifecycle are 'heavy' elements made?
- Why in this stage? What is it about the conditions (what is there now enough of) when this happens that helps fusion of heavy elements?
- c) 2 points max!
- What is the event called that scatters the elements?
- What two words best describe what happens to the Red Super Giant? (hint, it is not 'explosion', better to say it c.............. and a s................. violently sends the material outwards.
- Q3
- a) Do a simple calculation to show that 4x Relative mass of H does not equal (and is more) that 1x He. Then ONE SHORT sentences that states WHAT happens to mass of sun (NOT WHY - it does not ask you to explain!)
- b) 2 points!...
- Does the sun have a lot (or a little bit) of hydrogen?
- Does one fusion event release a lot (or a little bit) of energy?
- Does it all fuse at once, or 'slowly over a long period of time'
