Use the following resources to add notes to the handouts to describe and explain how ionising radiation can be used in the following applications;
- Smoke Detectors (Alpha)
- Paper/foil factories (Beta)
- Leaky pipe detection (Gamma)
- Sterilisation (Gamma)
- Radiotheraphy (Gamma / Alpha)
Use;
- Your textbooks
- BBC Bitesize
- Sheet "1 - RESEARCH Qs" - You DO NOT need to do the questions on this sheet separately, but you may find it useful to use them as a checklist that you have enough detail in your handouts
For each use;
- Add a brief description of how it works
- Explain the choice of emitter, in terms of the ionising power and/or penetrative properties desired for it to work properly
- Suggest a suitable half-life for the source for the desired use
- How can the risks to the user be minimised (reducing exposure, increasing distance from source, shielding etc.)
