2023-24

10H English Mr Heeney

Date

Oct. 11, 2023, 2 p.m.

Additional Info
1. Read the poem 'Search For My Tongue' twice: once in your head, then aloud to a partner.

2. In pairs, discuss your initial reaction to the poem and jot this down in a sentence or two (Pukka Pads).

3. Read the sheet titled ''Search For My Tongue' notes' on OneNote to aid understanding.

4. On Pukka Pads, work independently to answer the following questions (full sentences):

- How would you feel if you moved to a new country and you had to speak in a different language all the time?

- Do you think that you would forget how to speak your own language or mother tongue?

- How do you think the poet feels about her ability to speak in two languages?

- Why do you think the poet has included both English and Gujarati in her poem?

- Sujata writes in Gujarati but does not translate it into English immediately. How would an English speaking person feel if they had no translation?

- Why do you think the author uses phonetic representation of the Gujarati script? And what is the effect upon the poem? (Think about how the poet describes her two languages fighting with each other in her mouth and then look at how much English text there is compared to the Gujarati.)

- Look at lines 16 and 31, if the Gujarati text was removed from the poem would it affect the reading of the poem? What does this suggest about the importance of Gujarati in the text?

If any you complete these questions before the end of the lesson, please make a start on annotating your copy of the poem itself.

Please remember to upload all work to OneNote – we will be continuing with this poem on Friday in our double.
