Unit 6 Covalent Compounds - Test Topics

« Be able to calculate molar mass give a compound

« Nomenclature is cumulative and will include:

  • Ionic
  • Covalent
  • Acids

« Know how to name acids, covalent molecules and ionic formulas given the formula or elements bonded

« Know how to write a formula given the elements bonded or the name of the compound

« Know the properties of ionic, covalent and metallic compounds and how they are different from one another and the following properties: (this is a general list, refer to your class notes/foldable)

  • Valence electrons behavior
  • Melting point
  • Ions included or not included
  • State of Matter at room temp
  • Conductivity
  • Solubility
  • Flammability

« Know the number electrons, strength and length of single, double and triple bonds

« Know the definitions of polarity, polar and non-polar bonds

« Know how to determine bond type given the electronegativities

« Know the definition and how to recognize molecules with resonance

« Know study guide questions (these are great short answer questions!)

« Be able to draw the Lewis Structure and use the 2D model to determine

  • the VSEPR Geometry (shape),
  • bond angle and
