Types of Reactions

Date
Oct. 30, 2017
Additional Info
(students in preassigned groups)
Introduction: Sort the cards from Does it Melt? into two categories: physical vs chemical
- What criteria did you come up with for each?
- Review definition of chemical and physical, law of conservation of matter, ionic vs covalent
Modeling: Using 5 sheets of paper, 1) create a page for each type of chemical reaction (synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement) with a definition and a model or analogy to help demonstrate the reaction type and 2) then one page for physical changes. Place your previously sorted cards on the appropriate paper. You will need to look up the chemical reactions of the ones on the paper and display this clearly. This is due Wednesday. 15% of your grade is based on your evaluation from other peers. I ADDED LOTS OF EXAMPLES TO THE KEY TO HELP WITH PLACEMENT OF YOUR "Is it melting" EXAMPLES.
Summary of what goes on each chemical reaction paper:
- 1. definition (2 pts)
- 2. analogy (4 pts)
- 3. any examples of the cards (2 pts)
- 4. equation example (search online) (2 pts)
(Differentiated/Student Paced: Some students already familiar with chemical reactions were assigned the topic of identifying reactions and balancing. They will present Wednesday or Thursday)
