2015-2016

Physical Science

Date

Aug. 24, 2015

Additional Info
WE WILL DO Numbers 1-30 FRIDAY AND MONDAY

COLLECTED:
  • NOVA Hunting the Elements 1-30
REMINDER:
  • BRING M&Ms, Reese's Pieces, and Skittles for lab tomorrow

SEE Slides below for more details

We started watching NOVA Hunting the elements. We frequently paused the NOVA documentary and discussed application of the topics. (SEE PPT) The NOVA is providing an excellent overview of Unit 1 specifically the following:

Investigate our current understanding of the atom and its relation to the states of matter and periodic table.

  1. Examine the structure of the atom in terms of (USING THE BOHR MODEL)

1) proton, electron, and neutron locations

  1. protons: positive, nucleus, identify
  2. electrons: negative, cloud, behavior
  3. neutron: neutral, nucleus, isotopes

2) atomic mass (know how to calculate) and atomic number (use periodic table)

3) atoms with different numbers of neutrons (isotopes), and

4) atoms with different numbers of protons (changes identity)

5) ions (different number of electrons, charged atoms)

  1. Compare and Contrast the 5 models of the atom (Atomic Timeline)
  2. Periodic Table (How to use, basic set up)
  3. Classification of Matter

1) States of Matter (Solid, liquid, gas, plasma)- particle representation

2) Mixture vs Substance
