Additional Info
  • Make sure you have read Chapter 8.1-8.2 in your textbook.  The "boxes" on pp. 258-9 will be especially valuable to you if you need to review how to write and balance an equation, step by step.
  • Do the 2-sided worksheet on balancing equations and predicting reactions (which was handed out during class). See the following hints:
  • Hint #1: Remember to list the TYPE of reaction (of the 5 types) in addition to balancing on the front side.
  • Hint #2: On the bottom and back, it REALLY helps to try to do a word equation first, then write the correct formulas, and THEN balance. When students try to jump right to the balancing, they often make lots of mistakes.
  • Hint #3: remember your 7 diatomic elements, all of which end in -gen or -ine. ex. hydroGEN, oxyGEN, chlorINE, etc.) They are diatomic when alone (as an element), not when part of a compound.
