I grew up in Pittsburgh. After high school, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where they trained me to be a computer programmer.
I later went to the University of Pittsburgh and got a B.A. and M.A. in linguistics. I also was on faculty there for 6 years and was Director of the Language Acquisition Institute (the Uncommonly Taught Languages Program), where I trained people to teach their native languages to others and taught both linguistics and ESOL.
I left academic life to do work in the artificial intelligence field, and worked in the IT field both domestically and internationally as a consultant and entrepreneur until early in the new millenium.
I returned to teaching in late 2001, and earned a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Georgia in 2008. I am very happy to be back in the teaching profession, the one job I have truly loved any time I've had an opportunity to do it. And teaching at Johns Creek High School is as good as it gets!
