Big Ideas: 'Stephen Lawrence...'

2024-25

9B1 English

Date Due

Dec. 6, 2024

Additional Info
Please brainstorm a few ideas around some of the big concepts in Corcoran's poem 'Stephen Lawrence isn't on the National Curriculum'. (You can use the concepts that we identified today in class, but feel free to add others if you think they are applicable.)

You might like to consider:
  • speaker's voice (adult or child? ethnicity? experience?)
  • the addressee, 'you' (adult or child? ethnicity? experience?)
  • surface level: the poem considers the emotional and historical proximity of the Stephen Lawrence case, and how race relations are taught in UK schools.
  • deeper level (themes/ideas): what do you think the poet is really exploring in this poem? What do you think Corcoran's message is?
