What you will need:
  • Green coursework booklet (content library)
  • Annotated copies of ‘Still I Rise’ and ‘Disabled’

Firstly, you need to choose your question: how the writers present EITHER powerful feelings OR suffering. 

Plan your first two paragraphs on Angelou’s and Owen’s poems (separately, it is NOT comparative).
  • Consider the point you are going to make (topic sentence).
  • Select the best & brief quotations to support this point from across the poem (suggestion around 4 per text to show range of language and structure, but it is up to you on how much to include).
  • Analyse the LFS of each quote in detail (might go beyond what we have talked about in class if you see more). Be specific: word class (e.g. verb/adjective), what type of alliteration (e.g. sibilance)?
  • Consider writer's intentions in their presentation of X powerful feeling or X example of suffering. How does the reader respond?
  • Writer’s overall message with this text?
If you feel ready, you could start to draft a paragraph (max 300 words per paragraph) but do ensure that you have spent some really thorough time planning first. There is lots of writing guidance in the coursework booklet to assist you.

You can plan however you choose, but the draft needs to be word processed and in UK English. You should use a formal, academic tone - no colloquial language and no ‘I think…’.
