Battle Descriptions:

  1. Battle of Second Ypres April 22, 1915
    - In CanadaÕs first major battle, the outnumbered Canadian Division faced the first use of chlorine gas as a battlefield agent. A third of the force, or 6,000 soldiers, were killed, wounded, or captured, but the Canadians kept the Germans from breaking through.

  2. Battle of the Somme July 1916
    - The scale of the fighting and the shocking toll it took still makes the Battle of the Somme synonymous with the horrors of the First World War for many people. The losses were truly appallingÑthe Allies suffered more than 650,000 casualties, including some 200,000 who had lost their lives. The Germans, who had also suffered greatly in the fighting, dubbed the Battle of the Somme "das Blutbad" (the blood bath).

  3. Battle of Vimy Ridge April 1917
    - Canadians successfully attacked the German-held strong point of Vimy Ridge. The thoroughly planned and executed victory has become a post-war symbol for Canadian identity and independence.

  4. Battle of Passchendaele Oct-Nov 1917
    - This battle is remembered for its brutal fighting and horrible weather conditions. Canadian forces, serving under a Canadian commander, captured their objective but suffered 16,000 killed or wounded.

  5. The Hundred Days Campaign August-Nov 1918
    - Canadians played a key role in the series of battles that formed the Hundred Days campaign. With the infantry and artillery working in a combined arms system, along with tactical airpower, machine-guns, mortars, chemical weapons, and armored vehicles, the German armies were driven back and defeated.

6. Armistice Nov 1918
- The war ended at 11 a.m. on this day. More than nine million service personnel and an estimated 20 million civilians were killed in the war. Reaction in Canada.
