I see from grading the final exam, that some of you need to review how to address the essay questions on the Regents. Here are some reminders:
Argument Essay
-You may use information ONLY from the four texts given.
- Do not write a personal response. It is NOT about you and what you have experienced!
- Cite ALL the texts used. Every time you refer to or quote information from a text, you MUST cite. Do not simply give line numbers because there are FOUR texts. Say, "In Text 3..." " We learn in Text 1..." , and so on. You may also put the citation in parenthesis after making reference to the information from a particular text.
- You may quote from one text as many times as you like, but you must have information from at least THREE DIFFERENT texts.
Text Analysis
- State the CENTRAL IDEA or topic (not theme) in your first paragraph.
- Say what literary element OR literary technique OR rhetorical device the writer uses to develop the central idea (topic), in the first paragraph.
- Use only ONE of the above-- metaphor only, structure only, characterization only etc.
- Cite evidence from the text. Refer to the text by name.
- This is NOT a personal response. Use information from the text only to support your analysis.
