(To recognize a conceit, or extended metaphor, in a poem, i look for connections among images. A conceit shows how two seemingly different subjects are alike not just in one way, but in many ways. When I find an image that conveys a metaphor, I think about how that image and metaphor relate to others in the poem. Doing so helps me to identify an extended metaphor and to better understand the poem's meaning.)

(An example of an essay like this is washing windows. Describe the step-by-step process using vivid words, metaphors, similes etc. Describe the dirty windows, the spraying on of the soap, scrubbing the windows, wiping them dry, polishing them with Windex. Describe how they look now that they're clean etc....
Insight into the task could be the comparison you make between washing the windows and taking communion. Communion is like a mini baptism, renewing our trust in and our commitment to God etc.)
