1. Consider the short story in which the narrator is the central character (for example “First Confession”, and “Blue Winds Dancing”). Write an essay showing how the language of the narrator affects your attitude toward him or her (that is, your sympathy for the narrator, your interest in the narrative, your feelings toward the other characters and what they do). Be sure to emphasize the relationship between the language of the narrators and the attitudes they demonstrate and elicit.
2. In “Barn Burning”, how does Faulkner make it plain that Sarty’s father and brother do not trust Sarty? Why do they have this attitude? On what evidence is their distrust confirmed? Write an essay in which you argue that their attitudes make Sarty a likeable (or not likeable) character.
