Starter: make notes on the connotations of the title 'Noughts & Crosses'. Why do you think Blackman chose this as the title for the novel? What do you notice about the aims of the game? What might its symbolic significance be for this story?

Read slides 6-7 and understand the plot and meaning of 'speculative fiction'.

Make notes on the meaning of the themes from slide 10.

Look at the character list on slide12.

Read Act 1 Scene 1 and make a note of the themes established in the exposition of the play.

Make a mindmap or bullet point notes on the initial characterisation of both Callum and Sephy. How are they presented? What can we infer about them from the way they speak and interact with each other (see slide 15). How are they similar / different? Why does the writer establish these differences / similarities?

Annotate the section on slide 16 in detail (you can do this on the slide on OneNote).

Use slides 17-20 to help you write an analytical paragraph in response to the question: How does the writer use contract to emphasise the difference between Callum and Sephy in Act 1, Scene 1?
