Read the article by David de Laura on Hardy and the 'ache of modernism'. Make sure you have read and understood the introductory material and highlight and annotate the sections on Tess in detail (no need to highlight the sections on Hardy's other novels but you should still peruse them to get a sense of the argument and Hardy's views on modernism more generally).
