In this module, we'll be learning how engineers use data to optimize a design, and we'll be learning about aspects of flight / aeronautical systems.
We will start by following the directions on the PDF to make a highly specified hoop glider. Once that glider is flown and tested, we will record its 2 best flights (of 5) and then make a modification in the design (substituting printer paper with construction paper or graph paper, OR by substituting the original straw with a longer straw). The modified design will then be thrown and compared with the original. All data (from best 2 flights per person, per design) will be entered and shared in the "Hoop Design Analysis" google sheet.
Your assessment will be based on the original specified glider design, your modified design, and your responses to the attached "Hoop Glider Analysis" document.
At Home/On Your Own, you will go to the PBS Learning Media link (below) to learn about the Challenge of Flight.
You will also choose a Flight Design Option for a client (see "Design Decisions: Client Needs" sheet) that addresses their criteria and constraints.
By the end of this module, ALL students will submit the completed "Hoop Glider Analysis w/ Decision Matrix" doc, ONE client page from the "Design Decisions" doc, and have completed 1 slide from the "Airplane Designs" Google Slide set.
