Extract A, adapted from the History Learning Site website

"Martin Luther King's most significant contribution to the Civil Rights Movement came during the March on Washington, which was a major success. Held on August 28th, 1963, it attracted between 250,000 and 400,000 people. Here, as the final speaker, King made his legendary 'I have a Dream' speech. The speech was a sensational moment, provoking emotion from the crowd and providing the Civil Rights Movement with worldwide publicity. In the aftermath of King's powerful speech, Congress decided to pass President Kennedy's civil rights bill, which became the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This far-reaching Act was a landmark event in the fight for greater equality for African Americans, and Martin Luther King played an essential role in ensuring it was passed."
