1. Read page 5 'the plan and reality' about the Battle of the Somme.

The plan was based on a number of assumptions, copy out and complete the chart (this chart is in One Note for you)showing the difference between the plan and reality:

1. Aircraft (what were they supposed to do?)

2. Bombing / bombs

3. Walking

4. Timing - how long did the bombing go on for? when did the bombing stop?

5. Ammunition - did it all work?

6. German trenches

1. Read page 6b - sources

Annotate these sources, looking at the following:

What does it tell you about the battle?

What does it tell you about the war?

What does it tell you about conditions?

What does it tell you about he soldiers experiences?

What does it tell you about the Germans?

Once you have done this, produce small summaries (bullet points in answer to the questions above.

Don't worry if you don't finish it all
