Hazards-ELSS synoptic
2024-25
Date Due
Dec. 2, 2024
Additional Info
Examine how the impacts of seismic activity are severely worsened by the water cycle (12)
Please hand write on A4 paper (unless you normally type your exams, in which case type) and uploaded scans to 04 Hazards > 07 Synoptic Links (create a new page for it).
Remember the recommended structure:
- Introduction (define two key terms and maybe signpost your answer - i.e. a one sentence overview of what your key themes will be)
- 3 or 4 paragraphs, each dealing with a different synoptic link. Remember you are dealing with seismic hazards only here, so paragraphs on lahars, jokulhlaups and phreatic eruptions are irrelevant. Tsunamis, liquefaction, quake lakes and long term impact on frequency of earthquakes linked to crustal loading/unloading (Milankovitch cycles) could all be utilised
- Finish with a conclusion that summarises the key AO3 points
And general guidance...
- 6 marks for AO1 - you need to demonstrate knowledge of the water cycle (stores, flows etc) and knowledge of seismic activity - specifically the impacts. It's not always possible, but whenever you can incorporate impact stats from our case studies - death toll, cost, homelessness etc.
- 6 marks for AO2 - this is where you create the connection between your knowledge about the water cycle and your knowledge about earthquake impacts...how does one influence the other. Also consider things like spatial and temporal scale - over how big and area and for what time period are the impacts worsened?
