Answer the data response question, thinking about:

  • The checklist on p1 of the document
  • The marking grid on p1 of the document
  • The discussion we had in class
A couple of points that might help you...

  • The measure of how developed a country is is GDP/capita ($).  This is how much money a country makes in a year, divided by the population - think of it as an 'average income' for the country.  And then you can think about how being a rich or poor country might affect the social (e.g. death toll) and economic (e.g. cost) impacts of an earthquake
  • The Richter Scale (8.8 for Chile, 7.0 for Haiti) is a measure of energy released at the focus (i.e. the point of slippage underground)
  • The scale with Roman numerals at the top is the Mercalli Scale.  It is based on the severity of impacts, from which it infers the strength of shaking.
