Antarctic tourism data response

40 minutes lesson time + 20 minutes homework to complete this.

Location of work: OneNote > 02 Antarctica > Lesson 7 Tourism in Antarctica > Tourism in Antarctica data response.  I have also attached it here in case you can't find it in OneNote.

Study Figures 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d and write an analytical response to the graphs and charts.  This is a high level piece of work, but use the following structure to help you.

1. Aim for four paragraphs - one for each of the data sources (1a, b, c and d).

2.  Within each paragraph, try to do the following...
  • State the general patterns and trends or key information
  • Use numbers from the graphs/charts to illustrate these patterns/trends/information.  For example, if you have said that the overall trend is for tourist numbers to increase over time, state how many tourists visited in 2002-03 and how many visited in 2016-17.
  • Do a simple calculation using these figures - e.g. by how many have tourists increased over time, what percentage of tourists do the three main countries send combined
  • Try to explain the patterns and trends you have described using your geographical knowledge and understanding
3. Tips for each source
  • Figure 1a - just focus on the orange bars and ignore the blue ones; discuss how (with numbers to illustrate) total tourist numbers have changed over time; think about anomalies (bits that don't fit the trend); explain the growth of tourism and the anomaly (look at the previous lesson's worksheet)
  • Figure 1b - focus on the countries that send most tourists to Antarctica and think why these countries send more than other ones
  • Figure 1c - focus on the main activities that tourists do in Antarctica and think about why these are more popular than some of the less common ones
  • Figure 1d - focus on how the numbers of tourists from the four countries has changed over time, which countries send most tourists and which has tourist numbers that are growing faster than others.
You will get homework to finish this off (due on Friday).  I have set it as a homework task on the app too.
