Additional Info
Dear 9C
Welcome back. Apologies I'm not there.
IMPORTANT - at the end of the lesson, please could 3 or 4 people return the ipads of everyone in the class to the IT room next to the CAP room.
For your cover work, please complete the earthquakes data response question in folder 8. This will also be your homework, due on Wednesday.
Some directions to help you:
- I would begin by pointing out in a brief intro that these two earthquakes both happened in 2010 and are therefore comparable. However, one occurred in a very under-developed country (Haiti) while the other occurred in a reasonably highly developed country (Chile) - as indicated by their GDP/capita.
- The key at the top of the resource is a little unclear. It goes through levels of shaking from level 10 (the red x - 'extreme') all the way down to level 1 ('not felt'). The two columns on the right hand side of the table show structural damage to resistant buildings and vulnerable buildings, from 'very heavy' down to 'none'.
- The yellow dot on each map is the epicentre of the earthquake. Urban settlements are labelled along with their population size.
- I would go for a 'theme-based' approach. So you might look in your first paragraph at social impacts, noting the influence of the country's development (as indicated by GDP) on its estimated fatalities and structural damage likely to have been experienced by social facilities such as hospitals and schools. You could then look at economic impacts, noting the impact of the country's development on economic cost. You could then look at physical factors: how do factors such as depth of focus, distance from epicentre and magnitude seemingly affect the impacts of the earthquakes? This approach is just an idea - you are free to write the answer as you wish.
Don't forget about class ipad collection at the end! You should get these back later today.
Best of luck,
Mr Martin
