Additional Info
Hello all
Sorry not to be with you this morning. Please complete the following:

1) Complete the final two gap fills for the geopolitics section (use the photos you took at the end of last lesson (of missing words) to help you).

2) Complete the further 6 and 12 marker practice questions (found in OneNote folder 05>04>03 ('more 6 and 12 mark questions...'). There are two 6 markers and one 12 marker - read through the document as it reiterates previous guidance and gives some examiner report ideas too. Specific guidance on how to approach these is as follows:

6 markers
  • These two do not have any suggestion of ranking within the resources, but you will still have to create your own ranking of relative importance of migration impacts (for the first question) and sustainable tourism strategies (for the second question), even if the resource is only tangentially linked (as with the migration one)
  • I advise you to include what I am calling an 'AO4 overview sentence' - for example 'Figure 8b shows that some countries have net immigration and some countries have net emigration' or 'Figure 8c shows that a range of strategies can be employed to make tourism sustainable, and that different stakeholders (e.g. the government, individuals, organisations) all have a role to play). These very simple statements often get mark scheme credit - they go beyond the common safety net first sentence of 'Fig 8b shows global patterns of migration', which is just rewriting the caption and is worthless. This advice is also good for 8-markers and 12 markers.
  • Note that for the first 6 marker, they use the phrase 'donor countries' in the context of migration. This is slightly odd as the idea of 'donor countries' would more usually be applied to aid. However, the idea is that they are countries which 'provide' migrants (i.e. they are the opposite of host countries).

12 marker

  • Introduction - define key term (globalisation)
  • Paragraph(s) in support of the proposition (i.e. benefits outweigh the drawbacks). Within this, you should include AO2 (K&U of benefits of globalisation, including case studies...Coca Cola in India, maybe, or benefits of Poles in the UK), AO4 (evidence from the sources that allows you to discuss/infer benefits of globalisation), AO3 (analysis and evaluation - a commentary on why the benefits might be considered to be significant/important. This might include consideration of whether the benefits outweigh the drawbacks in some parts of the world but not others, or whether benefits might be strong in some categories (e.g. economic) but weak in others (e.g. social)
  • Paragraph that offers the counterargument to the proposition (i.e. drawbacks outweigh benefits). Within this, you should include AO2 (K&U of drawbacks of globalisation, including case studies...Coca Cola in India again, maybe, or mass tourism in Ibiza), AO4 (evidence from the sources that allows you to discuss/infer drawbacks of globalisation), AO3 (analysis and evaluation - a commentary on why the drawbacks might be considered more important). This might include a consideration of whether the drawbacks are felt more keenly in some parts of the world than others, or whether drawbacks might be strong in some categories (e.g. social, environmental) but weak in others (e.g. economic)
  • Conclusion - having weighed up both sides, you need to come down on one or the other with an evidence-based, comparative conclusion - 'I think X are more important than Y because...'.

3) If there is any time remaining, you can use it to revise for your end of topic test next Tuesday. A reminder that homework this week is to continue revising for the end of topic test. You will have approx 30-40 minutes at the start of Tuesday's lesson for further revision before the test itself.

HWK: Revise for test next Tuesday.

Best of luck,
Mr Martin
